The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) on Friday expressed support for proposed legislation that seeks stricter regulation of online gambling, including a possible ban on e-wallets for betting.
“It is the prerogative of our lawmakers to propose laws which they think will be beneficial to the public,” PAGCOR said in a statement, referring to a bill filed by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.
The measure aims to tighten oversight of internet-based gambling operations and limit digital payment channels used in such activities.
PAGCOR said it remains “fully committed” to curbing illegal online gaming and is coordinating with government agencies and private groups to combat illicit platforms.
Last month, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro revealed that the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in coordination with PAGCOR, had already shut down 7,000 unauthorized gambling sites.
Castro said the government will continue cracking down on unlicensed operations and warned the public not to support or engage with illegal online gambling platforms. (PNA)
