Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has issued a warning and imposed a SEK2 million (approx. €175,000) penalty on Svenska Spel

The gaming inspectorate has today announced decisions in two supervisory cases concerning Svenska Spel’s failure to correctly notify gaming locations for cash machines at two bingo halls. The reason is a purely administrative misunderstanding of how moving ATMs would be handled at the time. Svenska Spel has changed and corrected its procedures during the supervision.

The regulatory matters concern ATMs at two different bingo halls that have moved to new addresses. The administrative misunderstanding consisted in Svenska Spel understanding that a change of address should be reported to the Registrar of the Swedish Gaming Authority. But from July 1, 2023, changes were introduced to the gaming regulation which means that when cash machines are moved, a notification about the gaming location must be made instead, which must then be tested.

Since the notification was not made correctly, it meant that the game on the cash machines in the two bingo halls after the move in July and September 2023, respectively, was not covered by Svenska Spel’s license. The Gambling Inspectorate has also pointed out that the two premises where the bingo halls have moved are not considered suitable as gaming venues for cash machine games.

We regret what has happened. Our intention was to do the right thing, but due to an administrative misunderstanding, it went wrong. It won’t happen again, says Thomas Engström, Operations Sales Manager Vegas at Svenska Spel.

The Gambling Inspectorate has decided to give Svenska Spel a warning and a penalty fee of SEK 2 million.

During the supervision, Svenska Spel has corrected the routines for moving cash machines and has also moved the cash machines from the relevant locations.
