Ontario's igaming market continues growth in Q1

The igaming market in Ontario saw increases both on the previous quarter and year-on-year in both stakes and revenue in Q1.

The latest report from iGaming Ontario reveals that total wagers of CA$18.4bn – excluding promotional wagers – rose 3.4 per cent over the previous quarter’s $17.8bn.

However, the year-on-year rise in stakes was more pronounced at 31 per cent (up from $14bn), with gaming revenue of $726m – up 5.2 per cent over Q4 and up 34 pr cent year-on-year – following that trend.

Gaming revenue reached $690m in Q4 of the previous financial year and $540m in Q1.

“With 50 regulated operators and a one-third increase in wagering and revenue figures over the first quarter of last year, Ontarians who choose to gamble are finding many enjoyable options in our open, regulated igaming market,” said Martha Otton, executive director of iGaming Ontario.

“The revenue generated by Ontario’s competitive igaming market contributes directly to provincial priorities such as infrastructure, healthcare and education.”

Online casino games, including slots, live and table games and peer-to-peer bingo, made up almost $15.5bn of total wagers – around 84 per cent of total wagers. The games also generated $529m (73 per cent) of all gaming revenue for Q1.

Ontario’s regulated betting sector accumulated another 14 per cent of the total Q1 wagers – at $2.5bn – and 25 per cent of gaming revenue, or $181m.

Peer-to-peer poker generated $402m (2.2 per cent) of total wagers and $16m (2.2 per cent) of gaming revenue.

Nearly 1.9 million player accounts were active in Ontario in Q1, with $284 the average monthly spend per active player account.

Igaming Ontario oversees the Canadian province’s market as a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
