CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ohio’s racinos and casinos broke a record for gambling revenue in January, and that’s even before you start counting sports betting that started Jan. 1.
The state’s 11 casinos and racinos took in $196.8 million in January, according to reports from Ohio’s Casino and Lottery Commissions. It surpasses the $171.2 million record set in 2022. This is the money kept by the gambling houses, after paying out winnings, but before state taxes and fees.
The four casinos, which can offer slot machines and table games like blackjack, brought in $86.1 million, up from the $75.6 made last January. The state’s seven racinos, which can only offer slot machines, brought in $110.8 million, up from $95.6 million.
The Cleveland-Akron market, which includes the JACK Cleveland Casino, JACK Thistledown and MGM Northfield posted gains, bringing in $62.2 million in January. The properties brought in a combined $51.7 million last January.
All 11 gambling properties took in more revenue this January than last year.
This record coincides with the start of legal sports gambling in Ohio, which is counted separately from the traditional gambling offered at these 11 properties. It was long thought that adding in-person sports gambling would help the overall business.
Much more was bet in person at tables games and at the slots than at physical, in-person sports book.
Cleveland’s JACK Casino had $23 million in revenue from table games and slots in January. Its new sportsbook ended up with $270,000 in revenue. This trend was similar across the state.
Gamblers placed $3.5 million worth of sports bets at the downtown sportsbook, and $4.2 million of bets on the JACK Entertainment’s BetJACK app.
Meanwhile, gamblers put $165 million into slot machines, which left the JACK Casino with $13.3 million in slot revenue. Bettors also made $37.2 million worth of bets at table games, which netted the Casino $9.7 million in revenue after bets were paid out.
Ohio’s casinos and racinos have set a record for revenue every year in the last decade, except for in 2020, a year plagued by pandemic-related shutdowns.
In the Greater Cleveland market, January revenue was:
* $24.2 million at MGM Northfield Park, up from $20.2 million in January 2022.
* $14.8 million at JACK Thistledown Racino, up from $13.3 million.
* $23 million at JACK Casino Cleveland, up from $18.3 million.
